Christmas gifts for surfers: from first lesson to improver

6 dicembre 202310 min di letturaadventuro

Start with how much they surf

Don't buy a surfer a board. The best gifts for surfers depend on how much they surf now, and someone who surfs every weekend owns the kit they care about, so you'll struggle to guess the size, volume or thickness. Someone who has never stood up on a board wants a first lesson. So this guide sorts Christmas gifts for surfers by level: experiences first, a short kit section second, and a voucher for when you can't decide. The lessons run from first-timer to early intermediate, so a good surfer is better served by the voucher.

Every price below was read on adventuro in late October 2026, and the minimum ages are the ones on each experience's page.

A from-price is the lowest per-person price shown on the page. What you pay depends on group size and date, so check the page for your party.

Give a first-timer a lesson, not a wetsuit

A shop can't sell a beginner what a lesson does, and the two cheapest lessons here start from £30 and £39. A friend with a spare board is no substitute either, because a friend won't notice the leash is on the wrong ankle until you're already in the water. The catch is the date: a booked lesson has one on it, so book one only if you know when they're free. If you don't, buy a voucher and suggest the lesson. They pick the date on adventuro and the voucher pays for it.

If they're nervous, tuck our guide to learning to surf safely in with the card.

The classic first lesson: Watergate Bay, Cornwall

The beginner surf lesson at Watergate Bay with Blue Surf School is from £30 and takes about 2.5 hours including getting ready, so the time in the water is shorter than that. The minimum age is 8. Who it suits: an adult or a child of 8 or over who has never tried it. The catch: tell them to expect a lesson, not a whole session of waves.

A two-hour first go: Westward Ho!, North Devon

The open surf lesson in North Devon with The North Devon Surf School is from £39 and lasts 2 hours. The minimum age is 8. Who it suits: a first go that fits into half a day, which is what you want on a weekend away, when a surf lesson shouldn't take over. The catch: it's a first go, so someone who has already had a lesson belongs in Croyde, below.

Once they can stand up, stop buying beginner lessons

Match the gift to the lessons they've already had. If they can stand up and ride small waves, a longer session or a step up beats another beginner lesson, every time. Newer surfers are keen to paddle straight to the back of the line, and more time on waves with an instructor is how they learn why that can wait. Four options follow, with from-prices of £40 to £295. If they're thinking about where to take it next, our guide to getting past the breakers as a new surfer is a good companion.

The longer session: Croyde, North Devon

Beginner and improver surf lessons in Croyde with Surfing Croyde Bay are from £40, which is the price of the public lesson. A session lasts 2.5 hours, with at least 1.5 hours in the water. The minimum age is 8 on the public lessons. Who it suits: a surfer who has had one or two lessons and wants more time on waves. The catch: private family sessions start from 5, but the page gives no price for them, so message the centre through the page's chat before you buy.

The younger surfer's pick: Pembrokeshire, Wales

The 2-hour surf lesson in Pembrokeshire with Outer Reef Surf School is from £45 and lasts about 2 hours. It's pitched at beginners and improvers, and the minimum age is 7, a year lower than the public lessons in Cornwall and Devon above. Who it suits: a surf-mad seven-year-old with a parent along, or a family heading to Wales. The catch: anyone under 18 needs an adult on the beach for the whole session, so it can't be a drop-off.

The no-sea session: Lost Shore, Edinburgh

The adults improver surf lesson at Lost Shore in Newbridge, Edinburgh, is from £65 and gives you 1 hour in the water. The minimum age is 16. Lost Shore is a surf park near Edinburgh with purpose-designed waves, so there's no sea involved. The page tags the lesson Improver and describes it as for confident beginners to early intermediates. The catch is a firm entry bar: it asks that you can already catch and ride whitewater waves, pop up consistently and swim at least 25 metres unaided, so don't buy it for someone who has never surfed. Who it suits: a confident beginner or early intermediate aged 16 or over.

The big gift: Women's Surf and SUP Weekend Retreat, Pembrokeshire

The Women's Surf and SUP Weekend Retreat with Outer Reef Surf School is from £295. It runs for 3 days and 2 nights, Friday to Sunday, in South Pembrokeshire, with a shared house. The weekend includes three surf sessions and one paddleboard session (SUP means stand-up paddleboarding). The minimum age is 18, and it suits beginners and improvers. Who it suits: a woman who'd rather learn alongside other women. The catch: travel to Pembrokeshire and food and drinks aren't included. Several people can chip in to one voucher for it, since only one voucher can be used per booking.

What do you buy a surfer who has everything?

Give them a voucher, or a day doing something other than surfing. The lessons in this guide run from beginner to early intermediate, and a good surfer would find them too easy. Someone with the board, the wetsuit and the car park changing routine sorted rarely needs more of the same. An adventuro gift voucher works on any activity on adventuro, so it can pay for the coasteering, kayaking or climbing day they'd never book for themselves.

Surf kit: what to buy and what to leave on the shelf

Leave boards and wetsuits to the surfer. A board depends on their height, weight and ability. A wetsuit depends on fit and on how much cold they'll put up with, and a too-small one is a gift they'll politely never wear. You can't get either right from the outside. If you're set on a board, read what surfboard is right for you first.

For a beginner, buy nothing before the first lesson. Ask the centre what it lends.

Small things that don't depend on fit do get used:

  • Surf wax. It's sold in grades for different water temperatures, so pick one labelled for cold water.
  • Ear plugs made for surfing, which nobody buys for themselves.
  • A changing robe for the car park, which beats the towel shuffle.
  • A portable shower, or a large waterproof bucket, for rinsing off kit and feet before the drive home.

The voucher: the gift for when you can't choose

An adventuro gift voucher is valid for 18 months from purchase, arrives by email and works on any activity on adventuro, including every lesson in this guide, subject to availability. It can be used in parts, so a lesson doesn't have to use the whole amount. The small print: vouchers are non-refundable and non-extendable, and only one can be used per booking.

It also solves the timing problem. The Met Office says sea temperature off South West England is highest in late summer and autumn and coolest in late winter and spring. With a voucher, the surfer picks the date and the season they fancy. For a first lesson, I'd choose the warmer end of that range, because cold hands and feet make it harder to concentrate on what the instructor is telling you. Ask the centre what it advises for its own beach.

Questions about surf gifts

Is a surf lesson a good present?

Yes, if they're curious and haven't tried it. Most lessons in this guide last two to two and a half hours and start from £30. The catch is the date: a booked lesson has one on it, so book one only if you know when they're free. If you don't, give a voucher and let them pick. For a confident surfer, skip the lesson and give a voucher.

How much does a surf lesson cost?

The single lessons in this guide start from £30 at Watergate Bay, £39 for the open lesson in North Devon, £40 at Croyde and £45 in Pembrokeshire. Lost Shore's lesson near Edinburgh is from £65, and the weekend retreat is from £295. Those are from-prices, and what you pay depends on group size and date, so check the page for your party before you buy.

What is the minimum age for a surf lesson?

It varies, so check the page before you buy. Pembrokeshire takes surfers from 7, with an adult on the beach for under-18s. Watergate Bay, the open lesson in North Devon and Croyde's public lessons start at 8, and Croyde's private family sessions start from 5, arranged with the centre. Lost Shore is 16 and over, and the weekend retreat is 18 and over.

How long is an adventuro gift voucher valid?

It's valid for 18 months from the day it's bought, so a voucher bought in December 2026 runs through the whole of summer 2027. It arrives by email, works on any activity on adventuro subject to availability, and can be used in parts. It's non-refundable and non-extendable, so make sure you tell the recipient the end date.
