Gifts for canoeists: six canoe experiences to give
29 October 2026 · 10 min read · adventuro
What do you give someone who wants to canoe?
A canoe usually holds two people and one argument, and the argument is about who steers. So most gifts for canoeists are really a present for a pair, and the best canoe gift experience is a guided session where someone else handles the river, the boat and the refereeing. If you can't pick, give a voucher and let them choose.
Six experiences follow, across England, Scotland and Wales, at £36 to £125 on the pages. Three need at least two people booked and one needs four. Kayaks and paddleboards are in all paddle sports.
| Experience | Where | Price | Minimum booking | Book |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canoe aqueduct cruise | Llangollen, North Wales | From £45 | 2 | View availability |
| Open canoeing | Lake District and Yorkshire Dales | From £50 | 2 | View availability |
| Guided canoe trip | River Avon, Keynsham | £36 adults, £24 ages 12 to 16 | Not stated | View availability |
| Canoe trip, Stobo to Peebles | River Tweed, Scottish Borders | £55 | 2 | View availability |
| Day on the Spey | Kingussie, Highlands | From £60 | Not stated | View availability |
| Canoe and Camp the River Tweed | Cardrona to Ashiestiel, Scottish Borders | £125 | 4 | View availability |
A from-price is the lowest price shown on the page, so check it for your party. Only the River Avon page states a season, so on the other five, check the dates before you buy. Each page shows its own cancellation terms, so read them before you book a date for someone else.
What do you give someone who has never been in a canoe?
Start with a guide. A first-timer won't know that two people paddling on the same side send a canoe round in a circle, or that kneeling too far back lifts the bow and makes the boat hard to hold on a line. A good instructor sorts both before the first bend. All six pages list a canoe and a buoyancy aid as supplied.
Canoe aqueduct cruise, Llangollen
This is the one with a photograph built in. TNR Outdoors runs a 2.5-hour session from Froncysyllte Basin across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which the page gives as 306.9 metres long and 38.4 metres above the River Dee. It's from £45. The page says no experience is needed, you needn't swim, and the water is about 3 feet deep.
Who it suits, and the catch: a nervous first-timer, or a family with a child of 8 or over. At least two people must be booked, children need an adult with them, and sessions run morning, afternoon and Saturday evening, so check which are on your date. The centre sells waterproof phone cases, and anyone crossing that aqueduct will want one.

Open canoeing, Lake District and Yorkshire Dales
If they'd rather learn to steer than be steered, Adventure Days, based in Keswick, runs a 3-hour open canoe session from £50. It starts with canoe control on the shore, then turning and steering on the water, at a venue picked to suit the group and the weather. The page names Windermere, Coniston Water and Derwent Water among them. A thick wetsuit and a hot drink afterwards are included.
Best for a pair who want to learn the strokes rather than watch the scenery go by. The catches: at least two must be booked, and you can't promise a particular lake. The page gives no minimum age, so ask through the chat before booking a child. They'll need swimwear under the wetsuit and sturdy trainers, not wetshoes or wellies.
Guided canoe trip, River Avon
UK Active Outdoors runs a 2.5-hour guided paddle from Keynsham, between Bath and Bristol. It's £36 for adults and £24 for ages 12 to 16, with an instructor, a canoe and a buoyancy aid included. Who it suits, and the catch: a pair new to canoeing. The page states a season of April to October, so for a December gift this is a spring present. The entry age is 12 and over, under 18s need an adult supervising, and everyone must swim at least 25 metres. It shows no minimum booking.
What about a couple who think they can steer?
Give them a river and let them find out. In a two-person canoe the stern paddler steers and the bow paddler supplies the power, which is simple on paper and a topic of conversation on the water. Book the three-hour Tweed first. A seven-hour day on the Spey suits someone whose forearms have already met a paddle.
Canoe trip, Stobo to Peebles
Biggar Adventure's River Tweed trip is £55 for three hours from an 11:00 start, with a briefing and a mid-way snack stop. The boat, paddle, buoyancy aid and a barrel for dry kit are included, and no previous canoeing is needed. The guide can run up to five people back to collect a car.
The catch is the headcount: two people, since the page asks for at least two booked and says two normally share a boat. Ages 10 and over, with an adult for anyone under 18. Everyone should be comfortable in or around water. The page names high river levels and wind warnings as reasons to cancel, and says any money paid is refunded in full if the centre cancels.

Day on the Spey, Kingussie
It's from £60 and runs from 08:30 to 15:30, so set aside the whole day. Peaks, Paddles & Pedals meets you at Ardvonnie car park in Kingussie and supplies the canoe, paddle, buoyancy aid and helmet. Bring lunch, drinks and waterproofs. The page says no experience is needed, but you should be ready for several hours of activity and variable weather.
Best for a keen pair with the stamina for the full day. Check the age rule: ages 9 and over, though the page doesn't say whether a nine-year-old needs an adult beside them, so ask. It shows no minimum booking and states no season, so check the dates before giving it as a winter day on a Highland river.

What if they want a night out as well?
The page says the camp needs no experience, and I'd still book a shorter paddle first. Day one is around four to five hours on the water, which is a long first go. Give this to people who have already found out they like it.
Canoe and Camp the River Tweed
Biggar Adventure's two-day trip paddles from Cardrona to Ashiestiel, then moves to a private forest site near Glenkinnon, where each group gets a teepee tent and a fire pit. The page lists £125 and doesn't say whether that's per person, so check the total for your party at booking. Canoes, dry barrels, stoves and a portable toilet are included.
Who it suits, and the catch: four adults who want a night outdoors together. The minimum age is 18, at least four must be booked, and the maximum is eight. You bring sleeping bags, sleeping mats, head torches and food for lunch, the evening and the next morning. It states no season, so check the dates, and if one falls in the colder months, a sleeping bag rated for it isn't optional.

Is kit a good canoe gift?
Not for a first-timer, because every page above lists a canoe and a buoyancy aid as supplied. For someone who paddles already, small things earn their place: a dry bag, a waterproof phone case, a spare warm layer and a changing towel. Cotton is the usual mistake, since it holds water and then holds the cold. Don't buy a paddle for someone you haven't watched paddle, because the right length depends on the person and the boat.
What separates a kayak from a canoe settles the boat question, and kayaking gear 101 covers essential kit for every paddler. If they start eyeing their own boat, our UK access rights guide sets out where you can walk, camp and paddle.
What if you can't choose?
Give a voucher, and let the argument about who steers start later. Eighteen months from a December purchase covers a whole April to October on the River Avon, and whatever a first paddle doesn't use stays on the same code for the next one.
It's emailed within minutes, so you can buy one right up to Christmas Day, and it's digital only, easy to print or forward. They can spend it on any activity on adventuro, subject to availability. Add a suggestion, such as a canoeing gift experience from this list, and they're still free to pick something else. Buy a gift voucher.

Questions about canoeing gifts
How much does a canoeing experience gift cost?
On the six pages above, prices run from £36 for adults on the River Avon trip (£24 for ages 12 to 16) to £125 for Canoe and Camp the River Tweed. Llangollen is from £45, the Lake District session from £50, Stobo to Peebles £55 and the Spey from £60. Check the page for your party and date.
Can you give a canoeing experience to one person?
Check the minimum booking first. Stobo to Peebles, Llangollen and the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales session need at least two people booked, and Canoe and Camp needs four. The River Avon and Spey pages show no minimum, so ask the centre through the chat before buying for one.
What age can they canoe?
Each page sets its own. Llangollen takes ages 8 and over, the Spey 9 and over, Stobo to Peebles 10 and over, the Avon 12 and over, and Canoe and Camp is 18 and over. The Lake District page gives no minimum age. Children need an adult with them at Llangollen, and under 18s need one at Stobo to Peebles and on the Avon.
Does canoeing run in winter, and when can they use a voucher?
Only the River Avon page states a season, April to October. The other five pages state none, so check the dates on the page before you buy a booking for a December gift. A voucher is valid for 18 months from purchase, which gives them time to wait for warmer water.
