Start Sailing - Level 1 is the Royal Yachting Association’s (RYA) entry-level dinghy sailing course, designed to introduce complete beginners to the basics of sailing small boats. It’s a hands-on, practical course run in a safe and supportive environment, typically using stable, single-sail dinghies. Over the course of the programme, you'll learn how to rig a boat, steer and control your speed, and develop a feel for the wind and how it affects your sail and direction.
Most of the course takes place afloat, with short theory sessions onshore to reinforce key concepts such as points of sail (the direction you're sailing relative to the wind) and basic safety. Instructors keep things simple, fun, and confidence-building, with plenty of time to practise under close supervision.
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to sail in light winds under supervision. It’s the perfect foundation for anyone looking to progress through the RYA Dinghy Scheme. And with hundreds of lessons, rentals and sailing experiences listed on adventuro, you’ll have no trouble continuing your journey on the water.
The syllabus is practical and progressive, with most learning done on the water. Instructors adapt to conditions and student needs, but a typical course covers the following:
By the end of the course, you’ll complete a short assessment of your practical skills and understanding, and receive an RYA Start Sailing certificate if successful. The emphasis is on participation and progress—no written exam is required.
Completing Start Sailing - Level 1 qualifies you to sail a dinghy in light winds under supervision. You’ll have the essential knowledge and confidence to take part in beginner-friendly club sessions, taster days, or continue practising with rented boats at accredited centres.
This course is also the first step in the RYA’s structured Dinghy Sailing pathway. Once you’ve completed Level 1 and gained some practice time, you can move on to Level 2: Basic Skills. That’s where you’ll become a more independent sailor, capable of launching, sailing and recovering a dinghy in moderate conditions without direct supervision.
Whether you’re aiming for club racing, family cruising, or just fun days on the water, this course gives you the right start. And with adventuro’s wide range of sailing courses and experiences across the UK, it’s easy to find your next step.
The course is usually delivered over 2 days, with approximately 12–16 hours of instruction. Some centres may offer it over a series of shorter sessions. The exact schedule can vary depending on location, weather, and group size.
The RYA Start Sailing – Level 1 course is assessed continuously through practical observation. There's no formal exam. Instead, your instructor will guide and evaluate you as you complete each skill, such as rigging a dinghy, steering, tacking (turning the bow through the wind), and basic boat handling under sail. Safety awareness and understanding of basic sailing theory are also key components. Instructors provide feedback throughout, and most learners meet the required standard within the typical two-day course. If you need more time, centres can often arrange further sessions. You can browse and book certified RYA centres directly on adventuro’s extensive sailing course listings.
