Start Sailing – Level 1 is heavily practical, with the majority of time spent afloat in a stable, single or double-handed dinghy. Sessions are structured to build confidence gradually, focusing on core skills and safety awareness.
Throughout the course, instructors will adjust content and pace to suit weather conditions and group experience. All sessions are delivered by RYA-qualified instructors in line with national safety standards.
On successful completion of RYA Start Sailing – Level 1, you’ll have the confidence and basic skills to sail under supervision in light winds. You’ll understand basic rigging, launching and recovery, steering, and sail trim. Importantly, you’ll also learn how to stay safe afloat and how to recover from a capsize – a normal part of dinghy sailing.
This course is the gateway to the RYA National Sailing Scheme. Most learners progress next to Level 2 (Basic Skills), which builds on these foundations and enables you to sail independently in moderate conditions. Completion of Level 1 also opens the door to club-based sailing, further instruction, or simply enjoying time on the water with friends or family.
