The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is considered a challenging trek. It covers 24.5 miles (39.2 km) with a total ascent of over 1,500 metres across three peaks: Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough.
The terrain varies from rocky inclines to grassy paths, requiring a good level of fitness, endurance, and mental stamina. Participants should expect to walk for up to 12 hours, with minimal rest stops. Prior hill-walking experience and training are strongly recommended.
While prior experience in hiking is not a strict requirement, it is highly beneficial. The challenge involves prolonged periods of walking, steep climbs, and unpredictable weather conditions.
If you’re a beginner, we suggest undertaking a fitness regime and shorter hikes in preparation. This will help you build up your endurance and ensure you're comfortable navigating varied terrains over long distances.
Participants should wear comfortable, broken-in walking boots with good ankle support, as the terrain is rough and varied. Layered clothing is essential to manage temperature changes throughout the day, including a moisture-wicking base layer, insulating mid-layer, and waterproof outer layer.
You’ll also need a small rucksack with plenty of water, high-energy snacks, a hat, gloves, and sun protection. A head torch, spare socks, and a fully charged mobile phone are also highly recommended.
Weather in the Yorkshire Dales can be highly unpredictable, even in the summer months. You may experience sun, wind, rain, and even fog in a single day. Temperatures can drop significantly at higher altitudes, particularly on Whernside, the highest peak.
As a result, it’s important to come prepared with waterproof clothing and layers to adjust to the varying conditions. Your guide will monitor the weather forecast leading up to the event and may adjust the plan if necessary.
Yes, the aim is to complete the challenge within 12 hours, which includes brief rest stops at support vehicle locations. The pace will be steady but consistent, ensuring that everyone in the group stays on track to finish in time.
