Hand planing is a form of body surfing that involves the use of a small, flat board called a hand plane or handboard. This board is typically about 30cm long and is held in one hand while surfing a wave.
The technique is simple but offers a unique experience. The hand plane is used to create more surface area for the body as it glides across the wave, allowing the surfer to ride the wave with more speed, control, and grace. By positioning the hand plane just beneath the water's surface, the surfer can better steer and control their movement, maneuvering across the face of the wave with ease.

You'll be using top-of-the-range equipment, we'll help you build your technique starting from the very basics. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced surfer, our hand planing lessons in Cornwall are designed to suit all levels. Children under the age of 8 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.
Our hand plane sessions are 2 hours long. You'll start with a sea swim with fins to catch powerful ocean swells and build your technique from small waves up. You'll also learn body surfing skills and get comprehensive tuition and feedback from our experienced instructors.
Safety is our priority. Hand planing in Cornwall is considered safe, and our experienced instructors will provide a full beach and ocean safety briefing, including assessment of ocean conditions and identification of hazards. Unlike traditional surfing, there's no surfboard tied to your leg, making it a safer option for beginners.
