A 2-hour personal skills course focused on giving you practical knowledge and key considerations for staying safe while paddling a kayak or canoe. This session covers essential safety techniques, decision-making, and practical rescue skills to help you feel more confident on the water. Whether you're new to paddling or looking to refine your safety knowledge, this course provides valuable insights in a relaxed and supportive environment.
The session begins with a short introduction to paddling safety, focusing on the clothing and equipment needed to stay comfortable and secure on the water. Instructors will guide you through key considerations when planning a trip, including how to assess weather conditions, water levels, and other environmental factors. You’ll learn how to make informed decisions based on your experience and ability, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable time on the water.
The practical element of the course will take place on a sheltered water environment, where you’ll put key safety techniques into practice. This includes learning how to assist a fellow paddler in difficulty, how to get yourself back into your craft if needed, and simple but effective rescue strategies. Throughout the session, instructors will provide personalised advice and feedback, tailoring the experience to suit each participant’s needs.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a solid understanding of paddling safety, with the confidence to handle common challenges and unexpected situations on the water.
