What to Expect

There are two different routes to the summit of Blencathra, each offering a unique hiking experience:

Sharp Edge
Sharp Edge is known for its exposed scrambling sections and is often regarded as one of the most thrilling ridge ascents in the Lake District. This route requires a strong head for heights, with steep rocky terrain and hands-on scrambling sections. It's a demanding climb, but it rewards you with dramatic views and a sense of accomplishment as you make your way along the ridge to the summit.

Halls Fell
Halls Fell, while still challenging, offers a slightly less technical route to the top. This ascent is still steep, but it’s more forgiving than Sharp Edge. The climb involves rocky paths and grassy sections, with occasional scrambling, but it remains less exposed. The views on the way up are equally impressive, with sweeping panoramas of the Central and Eastern fells of the Lake District.

Both routes lead to the summit of Blencathra, offering an unforgettable adventure, spectacular views, and a great opportunity to challenge yourself in the heart of the Lake District.

Location

Blencathra, also known as Saddleback, is one of the Lake District's most recognisable peaks, located near the town of Keswick. The mountain rises above the valley and offers outstanding views of the surrounding fells and valleys.

Starting from Threlkeld, hikers begin their adventure close to the base of the mountain, and the hike provides an immersive experience in the heart of the Lake District.

Prerequisites

This hike is best suited for intermediate hikers with some previous scrambling experience. While prior technical climbing experience isn’t required, participants should be comfortable with heights and scrambling on rocky terrain.

It’s important to have a good level of fitness as the route includes steep ascents and descents, and some sections require hands-on scrambling. If you have any medical conditions, please inform the guide ahead of time to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

FAQs:

Can individuals attend alone?

Yes! The majority of participants join as solo hikers and adventurers.

The experiences are designed to bring like-minded people together, creating a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Whether it’s a first-time outdoor activity or a new challenge, there’s no need to feel apprehensive—everyone is there to enjoy the experience.

Is there an age limit?

There is no upper age limit, as long as participants are physically able to take part safely. Some challenge walks and day experiences do allow under-18s, but they must be accompanied at all times by a parent or guardian, as there is no AALA Licence held.

For enquiries about under-18 participation, please get in touch via the adventuro chat below. They'll be happy to help!

What happens if the weather is bad?

Weather conditions are closely monitored using mountain-specific forecasts. If dangerous conditions are predicted, updates will be provided by 4pm the day before the event, or as early as possible within 24 hours.

As the Lake District’s weather can change rapidly, events will still proceed in rain. If conditions worsen on the day, the guide may adjust the route or, if necessary, cancel the event. In the case of cancellation, an alternative date will be offered.

What level of fitness is required?

A basic level of fitness is needed to manage being on foot for over six hours across potentially uneven terrain.

Many participants book a guide due to limited hillwalking experience, so there is no expectation to be highly hill-fit.

Before taking part, a medical waiver must be completed to acknowledge the risks associated with outdoor activities.

Are dogs allowed?

Dogs are permitted on some hikes, provided they are well-behaved and kept on a lead due to livestock in the area.

For information on dog-friendly routes, please get in touch via the adventuro chat below.

What kit do I need?

You'll need to bring some essential kit to ensure you're comfortable and prepared. Compulsory items include a waterproof jacket and trousers, walking boots with suitable socks, a rucksack, warm layers, a fleece or jumper, and a hat and gloves (waterproof ones are best). You'll also need to bring food, plenty of fluids, a mobile phone, and any personal medication.

Recommended extras include walking poles, sun cream, midge spray, gaiters, and a sit mat for added comfort.

How difficult is this hike?

This hike is rated as hard, as it involves a combination of steep ascents, rocky terrain, and some hands-on scrambling.

Sharp Edge, one of the routes to the summit, is a technical ridge scramble that requires a good head for heights.

Halls Fell, while less technical, still requires significant physical effort and involves some scrambling sections.

The overall difficulty makes this suitable for experienced hikers, but if you're fit and have prior scrambling experience, you'll enjoy the challenge.
