Three hours on Carsington Water with a leader, in kayaks or on boards, following the shore rather than crossing the reservoir. The pace suits beginners and families who want a guided outing instead of hiring and going alone.
The group meets at the visitor centre for buoyancy aids and a short lesson in how to sit, turn and stop. Launching is from the pontoon. The leader sets a line along the shore, with the group close enough to talk.
There is time to settle, a stop part way, and a turn back so everyone is on shore within the three hours. Boards are used when the water is calm and someone prefers one. Kayaks are the default. The session ends at the same pontoon, with kit checked back in.
Carsington Water is a broad reservoir on the southern edge of the Peak District. The guided line stays in the sheltered water near the visitor centre, not out in the sailing course.
Parking and toilets are at the centre, postcode DE6 1ST. There is no shuttle to a different launch.
No paddling experience is required. You should be able to sit in a kayak or kneel on a board, and wear a buoyancy aid for the whole outing.
Anyone under 18 comes with an adult. Mention it if someone cannot swim or has an injury that affects balance.
A leader in the group means the route, the pace and the turnaround are decided for you. Craft and buoyancy aids are included, and the brief happens before anyone is afloat.
The group stays small enough to keep together on the shore line. The aim is a calm three hours on the reservoir, with someone who knows where the wind funnels and when to head in.

The paddle lasts about 3 hours from the meeting time at the visitor centre, including the brief, the launch and the time back on shore.
Most of that is on the water, moving along the shore at an easy pace with stops. It is not a fitness session and it is not a hire slot you extend yourself.
No experience is needed. The leader sets the pace and stays with the group. Kayaks are the usual craft. A board is used when someone is happier standing or kneeling.
Say which you prefer when you request the date. The final mix depends on conditions and on who is in the group that day.
The minimum age is 8. Anyone under 18 comes with an adult in the group. The under-16 price applies to those tickets.
Children paddle when they can follow the group and wear a buoyancy aid without fuss. A double kayak is the usual place for a younger child, with an adult in the other seat.
A leader, a kayak or board, a paddle and a buoyancy aid are included for the three hours. A short brief on strokes and on where the group is going comes before launch.
Wetsuits are available if the water is cold. Lunch is not included. A drink in a bag that can get wet is worth bringing.

The route follows the shore of the reservoir, out and back, with the distance set by the group's pace and the wind. There is no open crossing of the whole lake.
Stops are on the water or at an easy landing. The leader turns the group around in time to be back for the end of the three hours.
Light wind is part of a normal day. If the reservoir is too rough for a beginner group, the paddle is moved or refunded.
That call is made before launch when the morning is already poor, or on the water if the wind rises and the shore is the safer place.
A request is confirmed by email. The places are held when that confirmation arrives, not at the moment you send the request.
Lead time is 24 hours. A full slot is offered again on another Saturday or Sunday.
Being able to swim, or saying clearly that you cannot, matters because the group is on open water even though it stays near shore. Buoyancy aids are worn throughout.
Medical conditions that affect balance or grip should be mentioned when you request the date, so the leader can put that person in the steadiest craft.
Cancel at least 48 hours before the start for a full refund under the moderate terms. Inside that window the standard moderate terms apply.
A weather stop is moved or refunded even inside 48 hours. The leader makes that call.
