Learn the essential skills of navigation in the beautiful countryside of Buckinghamshire. This course is designed for those who have little or no experience with map reading and want to gain confidence outdoors. You’ll start by getting to grips with map basics in a relaxed café setting, followed by hands-on learning in the great outdoors. Whether you’re new to the outdoors or looking to refresh your skills, this course provides a welcoming environment to build your confidence and understanding.
We’ll meet at 09:30 at a local café in Stokenchurch, where the session will begin with an introduction to map reading. You’ll learn how to orientate your map and familiarise yourself with the symbols and features most commonly encountered in the countryside. Once everyone is comfortable with the basics, we’ll head outdoors for practical exercises.
We’ll cover essential navigation techniques such as using handrails and identifying key features on the landscape to match with your map. You’ll also learn how to measure distances and time your walks using pacing. Along the way, we’ll discuss important safety considerations, kit choices, and the Countryside Code. The session will finish around 12:30.
