A private guide for two people on Millstone Edge, for a half day or a full day. The session suits climbers who can already tie in and belay, and who want routes chosen for them on the grit above Hathersage.
Meeting is at the car park, with a short walk to the edge before any ropes come out. The guide agrees what the pair want from the hours ahead, then sets up the first routes. A half day covers several climbs and some time on belaying or gear. A full day adds a longer break and more routes, still at the pair's pace.
No other group joins the booking. The guide stays for the whole time, including the walk back to the cars. Leading on easy ground can be part of the plan if it is requested when booking. Seconding well-protected routes is the default.
Millstone Edge sits above Hathersage, with a short approach from Surprise View. The rock is steep grit, with routes that suit people moving on from indoor walls and first outdoor leads.
Surprise View looks over the valley. The path to the crag is uneven, so shoes that can walk a few minutes of rough ground are the right choice.
Comfort in a harness, and the ability to belay on a top rope, are needed before this day. A first ever session on rock is a different product.
Injuries and a short note of what has been climbed help the guide pick routes. Anyone under 18 comes with an adult.
Because the booking is private, the routes and the pace follow the two climbers rather than a set group lesson. Kit for the plan is included, and the guide knows which parts of the edge stay climbable when a breeze picks up.
A clear briefing happens before anyone leaves the ground, with time for questions between climbs. The aim is a day that can be built on, not a rush through as many routes as possible.
Meet at Surprise View car park, above Hathersage, postcode S32 1DA. Millstone Edge is a short walk from the car park.
The car park is pay and display. Allow extra time on clear weekends.
The price is for the guide and up to two climbers, not per person. A half day is 4 hours and a full day is 8 hours, including the walk to the crag.
You pick the length when you book. One booking uses the whole slot, so you are not joined by another party.
You should already be happy tying in and belaying on a top rope. This day is for building on that, not for a first ever session on rock.
If you have only climbed indoors, book the introductory session instead. Tell us what you have done and the guide will match the routes to that.
Meet at Surprise View car park, above Hathersage, postcode S32 1DA. Millstone Edge is a short walk from there.
The car park is pay and display and popular on clear days. The guide meets you at the car park at the start time.
The minimum age is 14. Anyone under 18 comes with an adult who is part of the two-person booking or who stays at the crag.
The day is physical. If you are unsure whether a younger climber is ready, say so when you request the date.
Harnesses, helmets, a rope and a rack for the routes in the plan are included. Bring your own shoes if you have them.
You do not need to own cams or nuts. If you want to practise placing your own gear, say so in the request and the guide will leave time for it.
Millstone is a high grit edge and it needs dry rock. Light cloud is fine. Rain, wet rock or strong wind means the day moves or is refunded.
The guide will contact you if the morning looks poor. You will not be asked to walk in when the rock is not climbable.
Half days start at 09:00 and finish around 13:00. Full days use the same start and run through the afternoon, with a break for food you bring yourself.
The exact finish depends on the walk and how the climbing goes. The guide agrees the plan before you leave the car park.
Requests are confirmed by email. The date is held once you have a confirmation, not at the moment you send the request.
If the guide is already booked, you will be offered another Saturday. Lead time is 24 hours, so same-day requests are not taken.
Cancel at least 48 hours before the start for a full refund under the moderate terms. Inside 48 hours the standard moderate terms apply.
A weather cancellation is moved or refunded even inside that window. The guide makes that call.
Most of the day is on Millstone, which is steep grit a few minutes from the car park. If the edge is crowded or damp, the guide can use a nearby buttress with the same approach.
You will know the crag before you walk in. The day does not move to a different valley without agreeing it with you.
