Spend four hours on Stanage Edge, learning how a rope, a harness and a belay device work before you leave the ground. The session is for people who have never climbed outside, including indoor climbers taking their first steps on real rock.
You meet at the car park and walk up to the edge, usually about 15 minutes on a clear path. The first part of the session is on the ground: harnesses, helmets, knots and how the rope is managed. Nobody climbs until those checks are familiar. The instructor picks short routes with good holds, and stays close while you try the first moves.
After that you take turns climbing and belaying. Most people get several climbs, with time to rest and ask questions between them. The session ends back at the car park, with a short talk about what you did and what a next day on rock would look like. You do not need to lead a climb. A short coached descent on the same rope is offered only if you want it.
Stanage Edge is a long gritstone cliff above Hathersage, with straightforward access from Hollin Bank. The rock is rough and positive, which is why it suits a first session outside. On a clear day you look across the Hope Valley while you rest between climbs.
The walk in follows a track and then a short slope. Wear shoes you can walk in. The car park is pay and display, and it fills on sunny weekends, so arrive a little early.
No climbing experience is required. You should be happy to walk for about 15 minutes and spend the session on your feet. Share any injury or medical condition when you book so the plan can be adjusted.
Anyone under 18 comes with a parent or guardian who stays for the session. Children climb only when they can follow the safety calls.
Groups stay small, so you get several turns on the rope rather than a long wait at the bottom. Kit is checked before every session, and the routes are chosen for the people who are there that day.
The instructors work on these edges through the year, so the plan changes when the rock is wet or the wind is up. You leave knowing how a belay works, which is the useful part of a first day outside.

From Hathersage village, follow the signs for Stanage and North Lees. Allow extra time on sunny weekends, when the car park fills.
The session lasts 4 hours from the time you meet at Hollin Bank car park. That includes the walk up to the edge, the briefing, the climbing, and the walk back.
Please arrive 10 minutes early so harnesses can be fitted without cutting into the time on the rock. The session finishes back at the same car park.
No previous climbing is required. The session is built for people who have never tied into a rope outside, including complete beginners.
If you have climbed indoors, that is useful, but the instructor still starts from harnesses, knots and calls so the whole group is working in the same way.
The minimum age is 8. Anyone under 18 comes with a parent or guardian who stays at the crag for the whole session.
Children climb when they can follow the safety calls. If a younger member of the group would rather watch for part of the time, that is fine.
A harness, helmet and rock shoes are included if you do not have your own, along with the rope and a belay device. Shoes are shared kit, so bring socks you are happy to climb in.
If you own shoes or a harness you like, bring them and the instructor will check the fit before you use them. You do not need to buy anything for this one session.
Light rain is normal on these edges and the session usually goes ahead. Grit needs to be dry enough to stand on, so heavy rain or rock that is still soaking will change the plan.
If the day cannot run safely, you will be offered another date or a refund. The call is made before you are left standing in the car park with no session.
Meet at Hollin Bank car park, below Stanage Edge, near Hathersage, postcode S32 1BR. It is a pay and display car park at the foot of the edge.
On sunny weekends it fills, so arrive with time to spare. The instructor meets the group at the car park, not part way up the hill.
The walk from the car park to the climbs is about 15 minutes on a clear path, with a short slope near the edge. You do not need mountain fitness.
If walking is painful or you use a stick, say so when you book. Some of the nearer rocks can be used, and it is better to know that before the day.
The train to Hathersage is the simplest public route. From the station it is about 30 minutes on foot to the car park, or a short taxi ride.
There is no pickup from the station. If you are sharing a taxi with others in the group, arrange that between you. The meeting time is still at the car park.
You climb on a rope that is already set above you, on short routes with good holds. You are not asked to lead, place gear, or climb without a rope.
You can sit out any climb. Belaying is part of the session, and the instructor stays with the group while that is learned.
The booking uses the moderate cancellation terms. Cancel at least 48 hours before the start for a full refund. Closer than that, the standard terms for a moderate policy apply.
If the session is called off for weather, you can move to another date or take a refund. That weather call is separate from a change of mind.
