Two hours in a small dinghy on Carsington Water, for a first go at steering, sail trim and coming back to shore. An instructor stays close in a safety boat, and further lessons can be added when you book.
The lesson starts on shore with the boat, the buoyancy aid and a plain brief. Rigging is part of the session, done together rather than hidden away before you arrive. Once afloat, the first job is to sail a short distance and come back, with the instructor close enough to help.
Later in the two hours there is time to practise the same moves until they feel less new. Capsizes are talked through before anyone leaves the shore. There is no certificate at the end of this lesson. People who want more practice can add three further sessions at checkout. Those are extra dated lessons, not a formal award.
Carsington Water is a large reservoir on the southern edge of the Peak District, with a visitor centre, parking and a sheltered area for beginner dinghies.
The boats stay on site. The meeting point is the visitor centre, postcode DE6 1ST.
No sailing experience is required. Comfort in a buoyancy aid, and the ability to swim or to say clearly if you cannot, is what the instructor needs to know.
Anyone under 18 comes with an adult on site. Mention medical conditions when you book.
Groups stay small enough for the instructor to see every boat. Buoyancy aids and the dinghies are included, and a wetsuit can be borrowed when the water is cold.
One lesson is a proper start. The pack of three further lessons is there for people who already know they want more than a single afternoon, without pretending that pack is a certificate.

Each lesson is 2 hours on and beside the water at Carsington, from the meeting time at the visitor centre. Rigging, a safety brief and time sailing all sit inside those two hours, and the group is back on shore at the end.
One lesson is the booking unless the pack of three further lessons is added. Those extra sessions are later dates, not three more hours on the same afternoon.
No sailing experience is needed. The first lesson covers how the boat is rigged, how to sit in it, and how to steer across the wind with an instructor close by in a safety boat.
People who have sailed before can still start here. The instructor moves on once the basics are clearly in place, rather than holding the whole group on the first turn.
The minimum age is 8. Anyone under 18 comes with an adult on site, whether or not that adult is also in a boat.
Children sail when they can follow the brief and sit in the boat safely. A quieter patch of water is used when that helps a younger sailor.
A buoyancy aid, a dinghy and an instructor are included for the two hours. A wetsuit is available when the water is cold, and soft shoes that can get wet are the right footwear.
Adding three further lessons at checkout puts a pack of three more sessions on top of this one. That pack is £120 for the booking, added to the person price for this lesson.
This lesson does not award an RYA certificate. It is time in a dinghy with an instructor, which is a sensible start before anyone sits a formal course.
The three further lessons are more of the same practice on later dates. They are not a Level 1 sign-off and they do not include an exam.

Light wind is ideal, and the lesson usually goes ahead in a normal breeze. A very strong wind, or lightning, means the boats stay on shore and the session moves.
When it cannot run, another weekend time or a refund is offered. The call is made before anyone is left standing with a boat that should not be launched.
Being confident in the water matters, because a dinghy can capsize even on a reservoir. A buoyancy aid is worn from the moment you leave the shore until you are back.
Say if anyone in the group cannot swim, so the instructor can keep that boat in the most sheltered water and stay closer to it.
Wetsuit size is asked for each person because the reservoir stays cold outside high summer. A rough guess is enough. The store holds a range of sizes and can swap one before launch.
Arriving about 15 minutes early leaves time for that swap and for the brief, so the two hours are spent on the water rather than in the changing room.
Cancel at least 48 hours before the lesson for a full refund under the moderate terms. Inside that window the standard moderate terms apply, which is why an earlier change of plan is easier.
A weather stop is moved or refunded even inside 48 hours. Once the extra lessons have dates, each of those dates follows the same rule.
