Trying open water swimming for the first time can feel a little daunting, but this coached session is designed to ease you in at your own pace. Held in the scenic setting of Derwentwater, it offers the perfect introduction for competent pool swimmers looking to make the transition. With expert guidance, safety briefings, and a focus on technique, you’ll gain confidence in open water while enjoying a supported swim in a beautiful location.
The session begins with a short talk covering essential open water swimming knowledge, including safety, legal considerations, and key differences from pool swimming. You'll then enter the water for an initial 350m shoreline swim, helping you adjust to the temperature and giving the coach a chance to assess your technique.
Once everyone is comfortable, further coaching will focus on open water skills such as sighting, stroke adaptation, and dealing with weather conditions. The final distance swum will be based on individual comfort levels, ensuring a positive and safe experience. Throughout the session, Neil will provide guidance and support, with kayak safety cover always in place.
Derwentwater, one of the most scenic lakes in the Lake District, offers an ideal setting for open water swimming. Sheltered bays and clear waters provide a safe environment for learning, while the surrounding fells create a truly special atmosphere.
The lake is easily accessible, with nearby parking and changing facilities available.
Participants must be able to swim 400m continuously in a pool before taking part. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, as open water swimming requires different skills compared to pool swimming.
Wetsuits are advisable for warmth and buoyancy, though not mandatory.
As the only dedicated swimming holiday provider in the Lake District offering fully coached sessions, this experience is led by a qualified and highly experienced coach. All activities are risk-assessed, insured, and follow strict environmental guidelines set by the Lake District National Park.
Neil brings over 30 years of coaching experience across various sports, including elite-level triathlon coaching. Having relocated to the Lake District in 2001, he has spent years developing his expertise in open water swimming. His background includes training over 500 triathlon coaches with British Triathlon and holding a key safeguarding role with Triathlon England. Now leading these sessions, Neil ensures each swimmer gains confidence, knowledge, and the skills needed to enjoy open water swimming safely.
