Experience an exciting mix of challenges and adventure on our Via Ferrata routes and underground climbing activities at Honister Slate Mines. Whether you're new to mountain activities or a seasoned climber, there's something here for all levels. Choose from the Classic and Extreme Via Ferrata courses or take on the indoor Climb the Mine for a unique and exciting day out.
Via Ferrata Classic
The Classic Via Ferrata follows the original miners' track leading to the summit slopes of Fleetwith Pike. This route is perfect for those new to Via Ferrata, offering a rewarding challenge without being too demanding. Participants will walk along secure metal cables while navigating through steep slopes and exposed paths. The activity takes approximately 1.5–3 hours, depending on fitness and weather, and offers impressive views of the surrounding Lake District landscape.
Via Ferrata Extreme
The Extreme Via Ferrata is a more demanding course, designed for those seeking a greater challenge. Participants will start by descending the mountain using fixed metal cables before tackling vertical ladder climbs, rope bridges, sky ladders, and exposed mountain edges. This course requires a bit more stamina and confidence but is fully guided to ensure safety. Like the Classic route, this course ends on Fleetwith Pike, offering amazing views after approximately 3 hours of climbing and scrambling.
Climb the Mine
Climb the Mine is a unique underground adventure, ideal for wet weather days or anyone looking for a completely different activity. Participants will explore an indoor, dry environment, navigating rope bridges, ladders, a Tarzan swing, and even zip lines. This fun-filled session is like an adventure playground for all ages (8+), lasting approximately 2.5 hours. Safety is a top priority, with participants securely clipped to cables throughout the course. The underground setting makes it suitable for participants of all abilities.
Each option is fully guided, with professional instructors ensuring your safety while providing support and encouragement. All required equipment, such as harnesses and lanyards, is provided.
