Spend a full day on the open slopes of Shining Tor learning the basics of paragliding with BHPA-qualified instructors. You will work through ground handling, canopy control and, when conditions allow, your first short flights just a few feet above the grass before building toward longer descents down the hill.
The day follows a clear progression from kit fitting and theory through to practical flying. Mornings usually focus on ground school and handling the wing on the slope, with short flights introduced once everyone is comfortable. Afternoons build on those foundations with coached practice and, when the weather cooperates, longer flights down the ridge.
Shining Tor is the highest point in Cheshire at 559 metres, with open westerly views across the Cheshire Plain and into the western Peak District. The ridge is a well-known paragliding site with reliable slope lift and plenty of space for beginners to learn away from more advanced pilots.
The surrounding moorland offers wide horizons and changing light through the day, with forest edges and valley views below. It is a rewarding place to spend a full day outdoors even before you leave the ground.
No previous paragliding or flying experience is needed. You should be able to walk uphill on uneven ground carrying a rucksack, run a few steps for launch, and follow safety instructions in English. Maximum pilot weight is 100 kg for equipment and safety reasons.
Instruction comes from experienced BHPA-qualified pilots who know this site well and keep groups deliberately small. Kit is maintained to a high standard and the pace is adjusted to each person, so you get genuine coaching time rather than waiting at the back of a large group.
Meet at the car park, get fitted with harness, helmet and wing, and cover how the equipment works. Your instructor explains how the day will run, site hazards and the basic commands used on the hill.
We also check weather, wind direction and which training slope we will use before walking up to the launch area together.
On the training slope you learn to inflate the wing, keep it overhead and steer it on the ground. This builds the muscle memory needed for a controlled launch and teaches you to read gusts and line tension.
Most of the morning is spent here, with the instructor adjusting technique until launches are consistent and you can bring the wing down safely every time.
When you and the conditions are ready, you progress to short flights a few feet above the grass, then longer hops down the slope. Radio coaching continues in the air so you can focus on posture, speed and gentle turns.
The afternoon consolidates what you have learned, with rest breaks for food and weather checks. We finish with a debrief and advice on next steps if you want to continue training.

Neil was great…guided us clearly and encouraged us before, during and after. We felt safe and confident due to his presence and had a really enjoyable time. We were a bit nervous at first but are so glad that we did it. What a fantastic experience.
