FAQs:

What is Ghyll Scrambling?

Ghyll scrambling is an exciting outdoor activity where you climb, scramble, and jump your way through a fast-flowing mountain stream. Also known as gorge walking in other parts of the UK, it involves making your way up or down a steep riverbed, tackling natural rock slides, waterfalls, and deep plunge pools along the way.

It’s a wet and wild adventure that requires teamwork, balance, and a sense of fun!

What is a ghyll?

A ghyll is a steep mountain stream, a term commonly used in Cumbria and the Lake District. These waterways carve through rocky terrain, creating waterfalls, pools, and chutes that make for an exciting scrambling experience.

The unique landscape of Church Beck makes it one of the best locations in the UK for this type of adventure.

What should I bring with me?

You’ll need a swimming costume to wear under the wetsuit, a towel, and a full change of warm clothes for after the session. It’s also recommended to bring a pair of old shorts to wear over the wetsuit, as this helps protect it from damage.

Sturdy footwear such as old trainers or walking boots is essential, as flip-flops, crocs, and water shoes don’t provide enough grip or support.

How many people can be in one group?

We can accommodate up to 12 people per session, making it a great activity for groups, families, and friends.

If you have a larger group or a private booking request, get in touch, and we’ll do our best to arrange something for you.

What happens if it rains?

Ghyll scrambling is a wet activity, so a bit of rain doesn’t change much – in fact, it can even add to the excitement! The Lake District gets around 200 days of rain a year, so stopping for a drizzle isn’t an option.

However, if water levels become too high or if thunderstorms are forecast, the session will be postponed or cancelled for safety reasons. In this case, you’ll be offered a full refund or the chance to reschedule.

Is it safe?

Yes, safety is our top priority. All participants are provided with high-quality safety gear, including buoyancy aids and helmets, and our experienced instructors are trained to manage the conditions and guide you through the activity.

Risks are minimised with proper supervision, and alternative routes are available for those who prefer to avoid higher jumps or technical sections.

Can I opt out of certain jumps?

Absolutely! While ghyll scrambling is all about pushing your limits, you won’t be forced to do anything you’re uncomfortable with.

There are always alternative routes if you’d prefer to skip a jump or slide, and our instructors will support you in choosing what feels right for you.
