At Honister, the UK's pioneering Via Ferrata, delve into history within the last working Slate Mine, treading the paths of Cumbrian Miners while exploring modern slate extraction techniques.
Historically linked to World War 1, Via Ferrata evolved from troop use of fixed ropes and ladders in the Italian Dolomites. Post-war, these routes expanded across the Alps, transforming into mountaineering challenges.
Our Via Ferrata adventures take place at Honister Slate Mine, offering the unique opportunity to experience history while enjoying Cumbria’s breathtaking landscapes.
Basic fitness is recommended for all routes, while the 'Xtreme' option is best suited for individuals with a good level of fitness and comfort with heights.

Wear comfortable, warm clothing suitable for the weather. Bring waterproof gear, sturdy footwear, gloves, a hat, snacks, and any necessary medication.

Absolutely! The Via Ferrata offers options suitable for families, including children. Our guides will ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all ages.
We offer various routes suited to different skill levels. The Classic is gradual, Xtreme for thrill-seekers, and Climb The Mine—an underground historical adventure.
Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on these sessions.
However, if you're keen to bring your canine companion along for some outdoor activities, we do have dog-friendly canoeing sessions available! You can find details about these below.
