Teaching powerboating requires strong boat handling skills, sound judgement, and the ability to teach clearly and safely in a range of conditions. This course is designed for experienced powerboat drivers who want to qualify as instructors under the RYA Powerboat Scheme.
As a Powerboat Instructor, you’ll be responsible for delivering training in small open powerboats such as RIBs and sports boats. You’ll be teaching a wide range of students, from leisure users to those operating boats as part of their work, so the course places equal emphasis on instructional ability, safety management, and practical competence.

Candidates must hold RYA Powerboat Level 2, a valid first aid certificate, and a completed health declaration or medical questionnaire. You’ll need the required logged experience before attending the course.
A pre-entry skills assessment is required to confirm readiness for instructor training.
This course is delivered by Peak Venture Demo as a showcase of how we run professional, instructor-focused training. The emphasis is on producing instructors who can teach confidently, manage risk effectively, and adapt their delivery to different students and conditions.
Small group sizes, structured feedback, and access to appropriate training boats ensure candidates receive detailed guidance throughout the course. If you’re looking to move into instructing or formalise your powerboating experience within the RYA scheme, this course provides a clear and well-supported route to qualification.
The three-day course focuses on developing both instructional skills and practical boat handling to instructor standard.
Days one and two concentrate on how to teach effectively, including lesson planning, delivering clear demonstrations, managing students on the water, and refining handling skills. Practical sessions include slow-speed manoeuvring, close-quarters handling, planing speed control, man overboard recovery, and emergency procedures, all taught with an emphasis on how to explain and demonstrate these skills to others.
On day three, candidates are assessed by an independent RYA Trainer. The assessment focuses on your ability to instruct safely, communicate clearly, and manage students and boats effectively. Successful candidates will be qualified to teach RYA Powerboat Level 2 under the supervision of a Principal or Chief Instructor. Those who also hold the RYA Safety Boat Certificate may extend their teaching scope to include the RYA Safety Boat Course.
A one-day conversion course is available for holders of the RYA Yachtmaster Instructor (Power) qualification who wish to gain the Powerboat Instructor endorsement without completing the full course.

Neil was great…guided us clearly and encouraged us before, during and after. We felt safe and confident due to his presence and had a really enjoyable time. We were a bit nervous at first but are so glad that we did it. What a fantastic experience.
