We had a great experience, Justin is a brilliant, easy going instructor who explains things clearly and makes it fun, whilst feeling safe. We now feel equipped to head out as a family with our own paddleboard.

This two-day practical course is designed to give you the skills and confidence to safely operate a powerboat in familiar waters during daylight hours. It covers essential boat handling, safety, and basic navigation, and leads to the RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate.
On successful completion, you’ll also be eligible to apply for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC), which is required for boating abroad and is commonly needed for many UK-based marine and watersports roles.
You’ll learn how to safely launch and recover a powerboat using inland slipways. This includes preparing the boat, assessing conditions, safe driving on and off the trailer, and winching techniques where relevant.
The course covers essential pre-departure checks, ensuring the boat and safety equipment are ready for use. This includes buoyancy aids, kill cords, fuel management, basic safety equipment, and engine checks, all explained in the context of real-world use.
A major focus of the course is confident boat handling. You’ll practise low-speed control, close-quarters manoeuvring, planing speed handling, turning techniques, stopping distances, and emergency procedures such as man overboard recovery. You’ll also learn how wind affects boat control and how to compensate for it effectively.
While the course does not focus on tidal navigation, you’ll be introduced to basic chartwork, buoyage, and navigation principles relevant to inland and sheltered waters. Emphasis is placed on situational awareness, collision avoidance, and operating responsibly around other water users.
Short classroom sessions support the practical training and cover safety theory, navigation basics, buoyage, rules of the road, and an introduction to VHF radio procedures (where applicable).

Neil was great…guided us clearly and encouraged us before, during and after. We felt safe and confident due to his presence and had a really enjoyable time. We were a bit nervous at first but are so glad that we did it. What a fantastic experience.
